Hello Peanut Gallery!
I know how much you all love reading magazines. Here is a link where you can get a free Lego magazine delivered right to your door!
You just have to have your parents go to the link and then submit their e-mail address. Then they will get to the registration page to get your free issue! How great is that ! :)

I've ordered one for our class. I've also picked up a great new National Geographic 2013 Almanac for our class library. Monkey was reading it today and he loved the pictures. I can't wait to hear your thoughts about it!
See you Monday!

Math Test on Multiplication
Hello Everyone!
Great job on your math test!
Here are some of the answers from the test. Most of you did really well. Here are the samples:
Great job on your math test!
Here are some of the answers from the test. Most of you did really well. Here are the samples:
Knowledge and Understanding - If you were able to answer all 4 questions correctly, using at least 2 different strategies you got a Level 4.
Thinking - In this question as it was a thinking question I wanted to see not only how you got the answer (multiplying 12 x 50) but I also wanted to know that you could give me a reason why, or justify, why we would have enough stickers. (e.g., Since we would have 600 packages, and there are only 400 students at Bellmere, we would have almost 200 extra packages.)
Communication - It was funny that everyone picked Option #2 to answer. :) To achieve a 4 you needed to not only get a number that was close to 2600 but identify why it was close (e.g., 2650 is only 50 more than 2600 and this is pretty close to the product of 2600).
Application - Many of you got a Level 4 on this question. As long as you applied what you know about problem solving and multiplication of two-digit numbers, you were able to get this Level 4. There were many interesting problems written. Some of you wrote about chocolate and others wrote about early civilizations....A few people even wrote about cans of coke :) They would have gotten a Level 4+ if they wrote about Diet Coke or Coke Zero :) Just kidding :)

Read To Succeed Conference
What a great day we had at the Read To Succeed Conference!
First of all, I want to thank you all for being good representatives of Bellmere. You listened well, followed orders, and acted appropriately. I was very impressed.
The conference was equal parts about the importance of reading and the importance of believing in yourself to achieve anything you want to.
Here are some of the pictures that I took. You can find the person's website under the photos.
Our first author was Kean Soo. He is the author of Jellaby. He talked to us about the process that he goes through to not only write a Graphic Novel, but to illustrate one as well. He also showed us pictures of the different tools he uses for both writing and illustrating.

Next we heard some funny and scary story's from Dan Yashinsky. He told us an old folk tale and talked about how sometimes stories tell us a moral, and sometimes they are just for fun.

After lunch (which was yummy pizza, chips and juice!) we got to hear Maestro Fresh Wes sing. He talked about not giving up. One of our classmates even joined him on stage to dance freestyle. It was great to see them up there dancing away!
It was a great day!

You Are Super Stars!
Hello Peanut Gallery!
I hope you all enjoyed track and field day. I'm sure it was a great success. Now many of you will have to put in the long hours to practice to get good at the event you will be participating in.
My presentation went very well. The teachers who attended were AMAZED at your ability to talk about your strengths and weaknesses in terms of the achievement chart. They thought it was pretty impressive that you could identify what kind of knowledge, thinking, communication and application you would need to demonstrate in your answers. They don't think their students could do that - I said it's because you are awesome and super smart! :) I think they are jealous!
We have a busy week coming up. We are going to be working on our research report on early civilizations. Remember, you want to keep your question specific and easy to research. As well, we are going to the Read to Succeed Conference where you are going to get to meet some authors and illustrators and see some rap artists and illusionists. It's going to be a great day!
Take care peanuts!

Ms. Bayne's Class Trip
Here is the problem we did in class today. Please complete it for homework. Have fun problem solving!
Miss Bayne's class went on a field trip to the railroad museum. The cost for each adult was $6.00 and the cost for each student was $2.00. If the entire cost of the trip was $72.00, give me two combinations of how many adults and children were on the trip?
Think about your research question for Social Studies at home.
Enjoy the weekend!

The Dying Art Of The Ninja
Here is the link to the great report we read about the dying art of the ninja:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-20135674
Here is the math problem from today:
Miss Bayne's class went on a field trip to the railroad museum. The cost for each adult was $6.00 and the cost for each student was $2.00. If there were 26 people on the trip, 4 adults and the rest were children. How much did the entire trip cost? Justify your answer.
Also, here is the music for your Dance which an Early Civilization would do.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4LvwfJjLQSI
Remember, you need to write a brief outline (you may want to use RAFTS) of what the dance is about.
E.g.
R - Community Member
A - Ancient Inca Community
F - Dance
T - Celebrating The Birth of New Livestock
S - Helpful
This dance would be one that the Ancient Inca's would do in order to celebrate the Spring birthing season. Animals giving birth in the spring is important because it meant that village would have goats for milk, and chickens to eat all through the summer and the fall. This dance is the villagers way of showing thanks for the births.
Enjoy!
