Find The Fence Posts & Social Studies

Here is the problem from today in math.

James is helping his grandfather fence in a part of the yard for a garden. The area they are fencing is 20 m long and 16 m wide. They need to put a post in the ground every 4 m. How many posts will they need?

Ku: algebra expression
Th: how you found the answer (organized)Com: organize ideas, math vocabulary to explainAp: knowledge of rectangles to this problem; perimeter (formula)
Also, here is our Social Studies Example - NO EXCUSES!

Here are some of the ways that the Ancient Greeks and Ancient Egyptians were similiar and different in respects to their Gods and Goddesses.

Who Ruled The Gods?

Both the Greeks and the Egyptians had one God that they believed to be the ruler. In the case of the Greeks it was Zeus, and in the case of the Egyptians is was Amun (also known as Amun-Ra).

The role that both of these gods played was different. For the Greeks, Zeus' only role was to govern all of Ancient Greece. He had one job. Amun, he was responsible for many different roles. This is an example of how the leaders ruled differently.

Volume Test - Samples of Level 4 Answers

Hello Peanut Gallery!

I'm done marking your volume tests and should have them back to you on Monday.  To help you see how you can improve, I've decided to show you some samples of work that got Level 4 answers for each question.  This can help you improve for the next time.

We will chat further about this on Monday.

Take care!
Ms. Pike

Knowledge and Understanding

You can see in this question how the correct formula for volume was used V=(Area of the base)xH and then the measurements were substituted in for the different variables.  As well, in question #2 you can clearly see how the conversion from mm to cm was done so that all of the units were the same.  The problem can not be correctly solved if all units are not the same.

Thinking

The work is not only nicely organized in a chart like format, but there are labels for each column, the dimensions for each rectangular prism are clear, as is the area of the base and the volume for the entire figure.  Math vocabulary is used (dimensions, volume, area of base).  There is no confusion as to what the thinking process was.  Nothing that was asked for in the question was left out.

Communication

The biggest "downfall" for many of you in not achieving a Level 4 in this question was that you did not use correct math vocabulary!  The use of the word "dimensions" was one of the most important words that could have been used in this problem to help you explain how the volume was the same but the dimensions that were used were different but all resulted in multiplying to give the same volume.

Application

As you know from all of the discussions we have had about this category, what you need to do for an application question is apply your knowledge and understanding (and schema) to this type of question.  It really is a two part question:  part 1: The knowledge needed to solve the problem (in this case, the formula for Volume) and Part 2: Applying what you know from other areas of your life (schema) to help take the knowledge you have of volume and apply it to the context of this problem.

Hello My Peanut Gallery!

Hello There!

I'm so sorry I wasn't able to make it to school today.  My hives got really bad over night and I had to go and get more medicine to get rid of them.  A big thank you to Madame Bernard and Mrs. Ryan for dancing to school with you.  That was very nice of them to take my place.  I hope you said that you appreciated what they did for you (and me).

I'm not going to be in for the rest of the week.  The Doctor thinks that it's best that I stay home and hopefully the hives go away.  I stopped into school today and got your math tests.  I'll have them marked for you and returned to you on Monday.  Mrs. S and Mr. Kendal will be with you for the rest of the week - Please be respectful to them (like you are to me) and try to be a little more quiet when you are doing group work.

I noticed that two of you left your band instruments on the floor...I've placed a little note for you read.

We will be starting to compare Early Civilizations during the next week.  Please take some time to review some of the specific things that you know about each of the different civilizations (e.g., government, use of agriculture, geographical regions).  You can find out some great information at the following sites:

Or you can do a Google search and find some other sites on your own.

Just for a fun view, here is a video that a Grade 6 class made about ancient civilizations.  DO NOT download the product.  Just click on the square in the upper right corner to start the video.  It's short, but fun to see the things about the different civilizations.

Hey Guys and Girls!

Hello My Wonderful Class,

I'm so sorry I wasn't there today.  I had a really bad allergic reaction to something and ended up in the hospital :(

But, I'm a lot better now and am very excited to be meeting you at 8:15am on Brimorton near Markham for our "Dance To School Wednesday."

Since we didn't get to make our own dance, I've decided that we can do a mashup of Gangham Style / Harlem Shake / Freestyle Dance to "Moves Like Jagger"  I'll bring a camera so we can take pictures and maybe video :)

I hope you were good today for Mr. Hoskins and Mrs Salhawala.

See you tomorrow!
Ms. Pike :)

Math Problem

Hello!

Just a friendly reminder of our test on Volume tomorrow.  Most of the questions are a "spin" on ones that you have already done.  Look back at your feedback to see how you can improve.

Here is the math question that we did today.  It is due tomorrow.

Ms. Pike :)

The movie theater got into a little bit of trouble because they were not putting enough popcorn into the boxes. They advertised that each box of popcorn holds 750cm3 of popcorn. It turned out that it wasn't holding that much but slightly less. Design 2 rectangular boxes for the theater that can meet their advertised offer. List some reasons why each box is suitable for their needs. (Do not list "can hold 750cm3 of popcorn")

We Can Skate!

Over the past 3 weeks our class was privileged to be part of the RBC learn to skate program sponsored in part by the City of Toronto and the TDSB.

Friday was our last session and I can not tell you how proud I am of our class!  They truly took the opportunity that they were given and enjoyed every minute of it.  I was amazed at how so many of you were so hesitant that first week, and by week three you were skating along without a care in the world.

We were also lucky enough to meet Cheryl Pounder, a two time Olympic gold medalist with the Canadian Woman's Hockey Team.  She truly was inspirational to hear, and it was neat to get her autograph and see her in person.

The Toronto Sun also came and interviewed Jeet about his thoughts on the skating program.  You can see the video and the article here:

Below are some pictures of us skating this week.

I also want to applaud you all on your behavior when we were at the rink.  You were very polite, respectful, and represented Bellmere well.

Way to go P2!

Thanks again to RBC, The City of Toronto, Ms. Legassie, Ms. Klipa and the TDSB for making this happen for us.

Ms. Pike :)

Math From Today

Hello P2!

Here is the problem from today.  It is due tomorrow.

Enjoy!

Ms. Pike :)

Create a variety of rectangular prisms using connecting cubes. For each prism, record the area of the base, the volume and the height.

I'm So Sorry!

Hello my cupcakes, pumpkins, cheese doodles and peanut gallery.

I AM SO SORRY!  I got busy marking your work yesterday afternoon and totally forgot to put the question up on the blog :(

So, if you do not have it done, you have an extension until Friday.

Here is the question:

A company wants you to design a box for their new cricket gear. It must be a rectangular box with a volume of 480cm3. Create three examples for them to choose from. Justify why you think that one box is the best.

Math Problem

Here is the problem from today.  Just in case you need it to finish your homework.

Ms Pike :)

Mr. Humphrey is trying to build the garden that the eco-team planned for the school. He knows the area of the garden is 50m2 and that one side of the garden should be 25m. How long should he cut the wood for the other side of the garden? How much wood does he need in total?
