Bellmere Best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Today was one good day in our life!

When we got in the class room we stated it off with some math.

We had french then recess.

After recess we read one of the CASI stories.

When the lunch was finished we went to the assembly.  We were the people who were presenting at the assembly.  We made a video that showed all the different ways we show respect in our school.  Then our principal, Mrs. Legassie told us that the video was awesome and that she wanted a copy of it for the front of the school.

Then we had DPA.  We played basketball and handball.

We finished our day off with library.

Terry Fox Friday

In math we did a problem about finding out how many toothpicks we would need to make 20 squares.
After when we were done, Ms. Pike marked the work.

In language, we chose a partner and we took a book and read it.  Then we used our summarizing template to summarize the main events.  We then wrote out a summary paragraph about the book.  A lot of people forgot to indent at the start of the paragraph, and some people forgot to include the title of the book they summarized.

Today we had a really good day. We played doctor dodge ball and we had lots of fun playing doctor dodge ball. We divided in 2 groups. Each group then broke into two teams.  After one group played, then the other group got to play.  We rotated for a few games.

We continued to work on our time line about Terry Fox.  In our groups we decided what events we would add to our time line.  After we wrote the events onto a card and then on Monday we will put that onto the time line.

It was a really amazing day!
Have a good weekend!

Government

Today we learned a lot of stuff about government.  People brought in different artifacts that were from their home and were about the different levels of government.  We had the most artifacts from the Federal level of government.  We attached them to our chart about what we know about government.

For math, we worked in groups of two to solve a problem.  We all used a table of values.  The problem was about a girl eating popcorn.  At the last part of our lesson we had a congress and gave each other feedback in the form of a star or a wish.

We also worked on our recount of Terry Fox's life.  We are going to make a time line with all of his life events.

We read a story about a camel who wanted to be a ballerina.

We had a good day,

Terrific Tuesday

Today  Ms Pike returned our time lines, we also pinned it up today.

For math, we talked about the categories that we are being evaluated on:  Knowledge and Understanding, Thinking, Communication and Application.  We found examples of each type of question.

It was raining so we did not have recess. Today at french we also were a lot noisy when we were picking our chairs . We also did a summary of little red riding hood using the graphic organizer of:  Somebody - Wanted - But - Then - So to help us along.

In social studies we asked questions about the Canadian Government and will answer them as we go through out unit.

We did an on-line arm workout for DPA.

We also visited the Book Fair in the library.  On Friday we can go back and purchase the books that we like.  Our class book order is also due on Friday.

We Spoiled Our Gym Time

Our day started off with a really good morning.

Everyone was listening in the morning, they were tired so they didn't say anything.  We were able to do our work faster and easier.  It was quiet in our room and we were all able to work to the best of our ability.

We had a wonder word for the day:  It was walkman.  We know what it was.  It was a machine that you could carry around with you to play music.

After lunch,we had a discussion about people with cancer. It was huge and really scary and exciting.  The main person we were talking about was Terry Fox.  He ran to defeat cancer but sadly had to end his race in Thunder Bay after running 3339 miles.  He raised 2 million dollars on his own, and a telethon also raised 10 million dollars.

We were all too excited about going to gym, so we spoiled our chance of gym time because some people were being unsafe in the gym.  So we had to head back to our class.

Group 5

Going to the Dr.

We had a supply teacher today.  Her name was Mrs. Jones.

We did a math problem.  At first people didn't really get the problem, but after they figured the problem out.

Also, we did our good copy of our personal time lines.

We learned about different types of fiction books:  historical fiction, science fiction, and realistic fiction.

We played Dr. Dodge ball during gym.  Whenever we get caught we have to freeze.  The Dr. has to touch the people who have been hit by the ball.  So they could be free.  If the Dr. gets caught, we are all out.  It was a tough and fun game.

Have a nice weekend.

The Noisest Day!

Today we called it "The Nosiest Day" because everyone at our group was so noisy.  We kept talking, and not listening.  When the teacher was talking, we were talking as well - Ms. Pike was not impressed!  We reviewed our class norms and the afternoon was quieter.

For math, we did a problem about predicting if we would have enough cubes to finish a design.  Some people were not finished the math, and had to sit out of DPA to finish it.  We also went over an answer to a problem that we did earlier this week and gave some descriptive feedback on it.  We call our feedback "A Star and A Wish"  A star is something that was done good, and a wish is something that can be improved upon.

Our lines have been good the whole week.  Other teachers are complementing us on how good our lines look.

In writing, we took our significant events and made a rough copy of our time line.  We chose 10 events that were really important to us and put them on our time line.

We ended the day with DPA.  We played freeze tag.

The Noisy Group 3
(Who will be quieter tomorrow)

The Great Day

We had lots of fun in math.  We did a problem about finding out the amount of grass seed needed to make a full bag of mixed seed.  We got to pick our own partners - We liked that.  A few people shared their answer and they got a "star" and a "wish" of something that they did well on, and something that they can improve upon.  People used different strategies to help them solve the problem:  multiplication, charts, and addition.

In writing, we got to work on our dot jot notes for our personal time lines for what happened that was good and bad in our lives.

We also talked about why readers abandon books and made a list.

In French class, we sang some songs.

At lunch some people in our class had cross country.

In Ms. Prezens class we shared our time line dot jots and sorted through ones that were significant.  She also shared with us her time line to age 13.  She also showed Ms. Pike's timeline as well.  When we compare Ms. Prezens and Ms. Pike's time lines they had different numbers of  good and bad events.

For DPA we played frozen tag outside.  It was lots of fun.

Respect Tuesday

Today we did a lot of work around our character trait for the month, respect.

We reviewed our definition for respect that we created yesterday.  We added new points which were examples and non-examples from our life about respect.

Our Concept Chart with our updated thoughts.

A close up of not showing respect.

In the afternoon we read the lyrics to a song.  The song is called "A Little Respect."  We came up with what we thought the song was about.  It turned out to be a rockin song - we thought it was going to be sad, and slow but we were wrong - in a good way.

We updated our class norms to include:

* show respect to teachers and students; and
* take care of the materials in our room and our school.

Our list of class norms so far.

It was a really respectful Tuesday in P2.

Homework:
* think up more events for your timeline;
* practice 6 times tables.

Marvellous Monday!

In the morning we had a great time.  We all listened and the coat room was nice.  We did a math problem about figuring out how much trail mix Grandpa would need to make 5 servings.  When we write our math answers we need to remember to check our success criteria to make sure that we:
* have clear thinking;
* show what operation we used (addition, subtraction, multiplication or division);
* our answer is in a final sentence.

We made posters about respect.

We had gym and we played dodge ball.  We had so much fun.

Today was also the day that the Grade 5's got to play at the playground.

It was a Marvellous Monday!

Week 1 - Summary

Hello Students and Parents of P2

I want to thank your children for making our first week back to school an enjoyable one.  The students are really keen to learn, and are picking up the new routines and classroom rules very quickly.

Beginning next week, we will start getting more in-depth with our curriculum expectations for the Term. You will find out more about these expectations at our upcoming Curriculum Night on September 20th.

Our character trait for the month is Respect.  We are going to start looking at the different ways in which we show respect (to ourselves, the environment, to others) and how respect is shown to us.  We are also going to continue to look at personal narratives and will begin to write our own.  In math, we are going to continue to look at patterns in shapes, numbers and the world around us.

Thank you again P2 for a great first week - I have a feeling that week 2 will be even better!

Ms. Pike :)

Dodge Ball Friday

We played Dodge Ball today in gym.  We had so much fun.  We played "Bug Dodge ball."  In this kind of dodge ball we have a lot of balls.  Two people are "bugs"  they then try and hit the others with the ball (they are soft balls) anywhere under their chest.  If a person gets hit by a ball they have to be a dead bug and lie on their back.  Then if anyone touches them they are free from being a bug and can start to run.

Today was a good day because everyone lined up good.  Everyone brought their forms back so we were able to have gym.  Everyone also had fun playing Bug Dodge Ball.

We went outside to read a book called "When The Relatives Came."  It was a good book.  It was a narrative book.  It was someones personal narrative about when their relatives came over for a visit.

We had math today.  We did some number patterns.  Some of the patterns were a bit tricky, but then everyone figured it out.

We hope you enjoyed this.  Have a good weekend.

Our Whole Day

Today we had a class discussion to talk about the different ways that we choose books.  Some of these ways were:
* look at the back cover
* choose based on your level
* choosing randomly
* the title interests us
* the pictures appeal to us

In the afternoon, we then organized our classroom library into genre.  We had the following lables:  chapter books, non-fiction, fiction, mystery, sport fiction, sport non-fiction, biography, action and poetry.  We need to remember to keep our classroom library clean.  We have two classroom libraries:  one from the school and one that has Ms. Pike's own books.  We have to keep the spines of each of the books on the outside of the bin, we have to keep them in their correct bin (they go back where they were).

We did some problem solving on a patterning problem about caterpillars.  We found that there were seven different ways that we could have solved the problem.  Here is a picture of the different strategies that we used:

We had a good day!

Please don't forget to return all of your forms by tomorrow or else we can't have gym!!!!!!!!!!

Our Second Day

Today we made a list of our daily jobs.  Each day, one group will cover all of our classroom jobs.  Its easy to remember what group it is, because it goes with our daily schedule.

In Math, we picked a partner and then we made a pattern with pattern blocks and colour tiles.  We remembered some things about patterning:  attributes, shapes, colours, types of patterns, changes in a pattern.

We talked about how we the back of the room to look.  We made a list of what our expectations were, and then made our bags and shoes look like that.  This is a picture of what we want it to look like.

We added a new word to our "wonder word" list.  We inferred correctly and our definition matched our thoughts.

In Language, we learned about the reasons that people pick a book, and why people get rid of books.

We talked about (and voted on) what activities we want to do in gym this fall.  We made a graph to show our results.  From this graph we learned that most people liked dodge ball and that no body liked basketball.

A great day in P2!!!!

Our First Day!

Hello out there in cyberspace!

Welcome to our first day of Grade 5.  Today we had a very busy and productive day.  We met our new teacher (Ms. Pike), our new classmates, and started to make some decisions about our classroom.

One of our first orders of business was to decide if we wanted a class blog, a twitter account, or both.  We paired up and told our partners what we thought of the idea.  Then as a class we shared our reasons for "yes" we should have one or "no" we should not have one.  After much discussion we decided that we should have a class blog but not a twitter account.

We then worked in a table group to create some possible names for our blog.  We wanted something that was easy to type and not too long.  Each table brainstormed ideas and then voted on what they thought the best one at each table was.  We then put these possibilities on a chart and talked about the pros and cons of each one.  When we were done we had narrowed it down to two possible choices.  We then took a class vote to see which one we liked the best....

Our winner was bjpsgaret5p2!  BJPS stands for Bellmere Jr. Public School, the Garet comes from a French word for grade and the P2 is the portable we are in.  A great class collaboration!

Just a reminder that the package that was sent home today needs to be filled out and returned to the school by Friday at the latest.  This is important information about your child, and needs to be updated each school year.
